From The Unborn, The Life and
Teachings of Zen Master Bankei

When people are firmly convinced that the
Buddha-mind is unborn and wonderfully
illuminating and live in it, they're living
Buddhas and living Tathagatas from then on.

"Buddha," too, is just a name, arising after the
fact. It's only the skin and shell. When you say
"Buddha," you're already two or more removed
from the place of the Unborn. A man of the
Unborn is one who dwells at the source of all
the Buddhas. The Unborn is the origin of all
and the beginning of all. There is no source
apart from the Unborn and no beginning that
is before the Unborn. So being unborn means
dwelling at the very source of all Buddhas.

You don't have to purify your mind

When people hear about meditation the first question
they ask is what should I do? And so there are many
different meditation techniques with many different
things that you can do. But before you get started lets
break down meditation so that you can see the
difference between doing something to your mind,
and finding the peace that’s your own Self-Nature.

Two types of meditation

Roughly, meditation breaks down into two types. In
one type you attempt to purify or in some way try to
get your thoughts and emotions "right" -- to control
your mind.

In the second type of meditation you notice that there
is a greater perfection and if you can take your stand
here, your mind will naturally come to balance. This
perfection is your own Awareness and Bliss. You don't
see this Awareness and Bliss but you know it because
you are it. It is by this Awareness that you see your
thoughts. Indeed, this is where you see from and it is
just who you are.

Many people think meditation is
calming their mind

Incidentally, most people practice the first type of
meditation. They feel that if they can get their mind
and emotions "right" then they will be “right". In a
sense who can blame them. They see their mind and
its changing thoughts and they think, “That’s the
cause of my happiness and misery.”

So they attempt to quiet their mind and to keep it
from jumping around, hoping that its calmness will
bring them happiness and peace. They struggle with
their mind and when they finally succeed in calming
it what happens? Their child comes running into the
room crying and the quiet mind disappears.

There’s another flaw in attempting to correct and
control your mind like this. This flaw is like dressing
up a thief to look like a policeman and telling him to
catch the thief. You know that the policeman will
never catch the thief.

In the same way you know that when your thoughts
take on the disguise of Awareness, pretending to be
the policeman, no matter
how hard they struggle,
they will never stop the thoughts in your mind. Yes,
you are reading this right. Your thoughts will never
stop your thoughts.

Seeing these flaws you hope for a better way

When you recognize the flaws in the first meditation
practice where you try to control and calm your mind,
you hope that there is a better way to meditate so you
can find the lasting wisdom and peace that you want.

So that's why I wrote the web site Light-Up-Your-Life.com
and the e-book, Making Your Wisdom Come Alive.
To show you a well hidden secret: that you are greater
than your thoughts. If you can just rest in your own
innate perfection, Awarenerss, the mind will take care
of itself. In this type of meditation you do not attempt to
restrict or control the mind. Rather you see that nothing
can be appart from Awareness, not even your mind.

Your mind is essentially good

The assumption here is that the mind is essentially
good -- not something that's out to get you. When
your mind comes to balance in your own Self-Nature,
it will become your friend and not an enemy that you
have to bring under control. Moreover, you will see
that the movement of the mind doesn't affect you at
all.

Remember, when God created the world he saw that
it was good. The world includes your mind. Believe it
or not, if you can find a way to remain in your innate
Consciousness and Bliss, your mind will no longer be
a problem. In fact your mind and emotions will
rejoice right along with you.

You are not a beggar

This is like a king who falls asleep and thinks that he
is a beggar. Whatever the beggar does he can’t seem
to get out of his identity of being the beggar (his
mind). But then a friend comes along and reminds
him that he is really a king (Consciousness and Bliss).
At that point the beggar wakes up and finds that he
has been a king all along.

You are not creating a new state. You are just
discovering what you were the whole time.

Join us on this adventurous journey
called Self-Knowledge

So take what you enjoyed about Light-Up-Your-Life.com
and attempt to meditate on it, and to make this
principal of innate perfection part of your life. At first
it may seem like you don't know which way to turn.
But keep on trying and soon you will find your mind
and your life changing in ways that you didn't expect.

Life will start to take on an adventurous and fresh
quality; a quality that you will never get tired of. You
will also see that life, when lived from your own Self-
Nature is better than you could even have imagined.

The value of life

Just think about it. How many wonderful things have
come together for you recently? That you finally can
read about your own Self-Nature; that you can
understand the value of getting to the source of
Happiness and Awareness; that you can now look for
happiness in a place where you can really find it, and
that you have the opportunity to step beyond the
confines of birth and death.

Not many people know about this

You should know that in the course of history it is rare
for a person to read about this knowledge, to be able
to appreciate its depth, and then be in a position to
meditate, so that he or she can experience this fully.
You life has just become very valuable.

Life is precious, take care of it

Sometimes people write to me and confide that they
have feelings of depression and that they are thinking
of suicide. Other people say that they have eating
disorders or that they are struggling with their weight.
You should know that no matter how you feel now, by
your own Self-Nature, your life can turn around on the
spot.

Right in this lifetime you can experience Wisdom by
which you will soar beyond your wildest dreams. So
take care of your body and your life.

When you eat, eat so that you can remain alive to
wakeup to the deathless core of your being. When
you exercise, exercise so that you can remain alive to
be an example of this peace for every living being.
When you work, work for the sustenance necessary
to wake up to this.

The body is a gift

In this way food exercise and taking care of your body
will not be the main focus of your life. You will just
apprciate the body as a gift so that you can go on and
experience that which is even greater than the body.

Dedicate your life to this and I promise that you will
not be disappointed. And then when the time comes
and this physical life ends, you will be able to rest in
the peace of your own being; a peace that you did not
create; a peace that never comes to an end.

Final Thought

If you live by this you will find that death is not a
problem at all.
